Obama vs. McCain on Foreign Policy Image

Afghanistan

Obama

Barack Obama will refocus our efforts on Afghanistan. He has a comprehensive strategy to succeed in Afghanistan with at least two more U.S. combat brigades, more resources and training for the Afghan Army, and a comprehensive development strategy.

McCain

John McCain has followed George Bush's lead, focusing on Iraq and saying we may just "muddle through in Afghanistan."

Iraq

Obama

Barack Obama opposed this war from the beginning. As president he will end the war responsibly and put pressure on the Iraqi to work toward real political accommodation. Military experts believe we can redeploy combat brigades in 16 months.

McCain

John McCain was a strong supporter of George Bush’s Iraq war policy and has no plan to end the war./p>

Iran

Obama

Barack Obama will engage in aggressive, smart, direct diplomacy that brings our allies together to pressure Iran to abandon its nuclear weapons program.

McCain

McCain would continue Bush's failed policy in Iran, which have contributed to Iran's progress in developing nuclear weapons. He supports big business profits over our national security, rejecting measures to close a loophole that allows U.S. companies to do business with governments that support terrorism, like Iran.

Diplomacy

Obama

Barack Obama will carry on the long American tradition of smart diplomacy to work with other foreign leaders, friend and foe, and keep America safe.

McCain

McCain will carry on George Bush's policy of unilateral action that puts American troops in harm's way without exhausting diplomatic options.

China

Obama

Barack Obama will work to engage China on shared political, economic, environmental, and security objectives. He will stand up for American workers, and press China to not give its workers unfair trade advantages.

McCain

John McCain has supported free trade with Chinese and opposed penalizing China for their unfair trade practices.

Russia

Obama

Barack Obama stood up to Russia, and will strengthen the alliances we need to pressure Russia to live up to its commitment to withdraw all troops from Georgia, while working with Russia on critical issues like stopping Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.

McCain

John McCain's reckless Russia policy has been described as provocative and dangerous.

Trade

Obama

Barack Obama has proposed a trade policy that's good for both Main Street and Wall Street, protecting U.S. workers and American interests.

McCain

John McCain this year travelled to Mexico, Canada and Colombia to promote unfettered trade. He will carry on the Bush trade policies, shipping thousands of American jobs overseas and putting Wall Street interests over American workers.
