Stand with the President in Protecting the Everglades

President Obama knows that the Everglades isn't just a national environmental treasure, but that it is also key to the quality of life for millions of Floridians. He knows that the natural beauty of the Everglades attracts millions of tourists to Florida, creating jobs and economic opportunity for the Sunshine State.

The President's Record on Conservation

  • President Obama has invested over $1.4 billion in protecting and restoring the Everglades. Thanks to that investment, plants and wildlife—including the endangered Florida panther—will have tens of thousands of additional acres of restored space to help them survive.
  • One of the last grassland and longleaf pine savanna landscapes on the eastern side of the continent is here in Florida—and to protect it, the administration established the Everglades Headwaters National Wildlife Refuge And Conservation Area, which if fully realized would span 150,000 acres while maintaining protections that will allow farmers and ranchers to continue to raise crops and livestock.
  • The President also banned four non-native constrictor snakes, including Burmese pythons that threaten sensitive ecosystems in South Florida.
  • The administration also launched a project to help restore a more natural water flow to the Everglades ecosystem by replacing a mile of the Tamiami Trail—a road that cuts the Everglades in half—with a bridge that will let water flow more naturally to 300,000 acres of habitat.
